5 points to improve hazard identification training

Developing and maintaining a robust safety culture that encouraged active hazard identification and reaction emerged as a key strategy to support active hazard identification and rectification. At least the following 5 points need to be considered for improvement:

  1. Dedicated training in hazard identification that is separated from the safety induction because it needs more time.
  2. Continue it with coaching and mentoring by experienced staff in the workplace and walk through in the work areas.
  3. Conduct hazard awareness training and induction training out of the classroom directly into the work areas that is reinforced by coaching and mentoring of workers at the site of the hazard to determine the appropriate mechanism to manage and control the risk.
  4. Supervisory leadership is a key of success to implement and continue hazard identification at site. Without leader’s effort, training knowledge will not be used and fortified at workplace.
  5. Explain misinterpretations on training: - Many leave hazard identification and risk assessment processes to others to complete believing this to be the role of the health and safety professional. Some workers have a sense of safety pervades workplaces in that workers feel they are fully protected by the safety systems that are in operation.
