LTI = 0, Now what?

Proper Safety Culture is set up and everything is in order, it is certain that your Company and Colleagues can create LTI injury free workplace. Some people will argue about Zero Harm debate or achieving injury free environment is possible or impossible… sorry, what I’m talking about is beyond it and not interested in Zero Harm debate.

Okay LTI = 0, then what?

When major injuries are eliminated at workplace, it is time to concern minor injuries such as First aid and Medical treatment injuries.

When FA & MTI = 0, then what?

Shall we stop here and do what we’ve done past again? It’s very easy to satisfy what we’ve done and sit back rather than to think “now what? beyond injury free environment”. Life is always unexpected, changed, grew and new technology is emerged/introduced to operation/production, adoptive “continuous improvement” is required hugely in Safety Culture. When injury was coming out, enemy was certain – root causes. Now there is no enemy, with who shall we fight? Rather than fighting with something, it’s better to improve our Safety Culture further.

We use “Metrics card” to promote continuous improvement beyond Zero:

Everyone should obtain 5 score per a month and Department attendance should be 100%.

Related to continuous improvement Metrics, do we give score for mandatory requirements such as PPE, Defensive Driving, Daily equipment inspection, LOTO or near miss reporting? No, we need to promote “continuous improvements” on leading & pro-active improvement actions rather than lagging & re-active features. Even we’ve had over 600 days without LTI, many days Medical Treatment Injury (I don’t remember as yet staring at board stats is not my job) free, but still I can’t see where continuous improvement ends; maybe it’s never ending cycle because life is so rich, everyday new challenge waits me at work.

Besides continuous improvement, you may use other philosophies as well:

Transformation - Transform your employees as HSE experts

Quantity to Quality - Improve qualify on hazard/risk reporting, actions, workplace inspections, checklists, JHA, Take 5s...

Safety for Business - Look at opportunities how safety can be used to expand your business areas

Mountains beyond Mountains...
