Hidden messages behind Safety Statistics’ Board

I understand many specialists like to post their safety records such as LTI, Accident/Incident, MTI free days or man-hours on Safety Statistics’ Board. Personally, I removed the board already because it was giving below messages to our employees:

MESSAGE 1: Your mates achieved at this great result (many days of LTI free result). Do not destroy their proudness and record – An employee feels shame and guilty among colleagues and management when reports LTI because he/she brings down superior result to Zero. Employees get angry who did it especially when safety records are linked with their salary bonus.

MESSAGE 2: Oh, shit. It’s bad for public reporting – Management try to modify injury type lower such as Lost Time Injury to Restricted Work Injury or Medical Treatment Injury because bad record on Public board may affect Company’s reputation.

MESSAGE 3: Something wrong will be reported on public – It scares employees and no one wants to be reported on Public board. Doesn’t matter it’s only number, employees find out who was behind the number.

In the end, what is the benefit of this lagging indicator on public board for company? Maybe Government Officials reward lagging achievement but it diverts our view to lagging indicators instead of leading indicators.
